Questions

The things people ask before they upload a book

If your question is not here, write to support@pressborn.com and a person will answer it.

Money and ownership

Do you take a percentage of my book sales?

No. Pressborn makes money one way, by selling credit packs. We have no share of your royalties, no commission, and no subscription. The store pays you directly, into your own account, and we never see it.

Who is the publisher of my book?

You are. Pressborn is a tool you use, not an imprint you sign with. Your name goes on the listing, you hold the rights, and nothing you do here is exclusive. You can stop using Pressborn tomorrow and your book carries on selling exactly as it was.

Do you upload the book to Amazon for me?

No, and that is deliberate. Pressborn builds the files and tells you where each one goes, then you upload them through your own retailer account. It means the account holding your book, your bank details and your sales figures is yours, not ours, and you are never locked out of your own title by a service you stopped paying.

What is a credit?

A unit of work. Running the editing passes on a manuscript costs credits, building a store package costs credits, generating a blurb costs credits. You are shown the price before anything is spent, and the current figures are listed on the pricing page. Credits do not expire.

What happens if something fails after I have paid for it?

The credits go back. A job that charges you and then does not deliver returns what it took, and you can see every charge and refund in your transaction history.

Your manuscript

What files can I upload?

Word documents (.docx), PDFs, plain text (.txt) and EPUB. A .docx gives the cleanest result, because the chapter and paragraph structure survives intact.

Will the AI rewrite my book?

Not unless you tell it to, one sentence at a time. Pressborn produces notes. Each one is attached to specific words and arrives with suggested replacement text, and nothing enters your manuscript until you click accept on that particular note. You can edit a suggestion before applying it, or dismiss it and never see it again.

Is this a replacement for a human editor?

No. It is very good at the work that is tedious and mechanical: catching the word you overuse, the timeline that does not add up, the comma splices, the chapter where nothing happens. A human editor brings judgement about your particular book that no model has. What Pressborn changes is how much is left for that editor to do, and how much you pay for it.

Do my earlier drafts survive?

Yes. When you finish a round of revisions you commit them as a version, and the previous version stays readable. Editing is never destructive to what came before.

Covers, stores and ISBNs

Can I use a cover I already have?

Not today. Pressborn generates cover concepts and you choose one, and there is currently no step for uploading artwork you had made elsewhere. If you already have a cover you are happy with, the editing and package-building parts still work for you, but the cover step will not.

Will the title on the cover be spelled right?

Yes. The image model generates artwork only. Your title and author name are set over it as real type, by us, from what you typed. This is the reason AI covers usually have mangled lettering and these do not.

Which stores can Pressborn build for?

Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, Draft2Digital, Apple Books, Kobo and Google Play Books. Each one gets its own package, built to that store's requirements, and you can build for as many as you like.

Do I need to buy an ISBN?

Only for IngramSpark, which does not assign them. Amazon KDP, Draft2Digital, Apple Books, Kobo and Google Play Books will all take a book without one. Pressborn only asks you for an ISBN when a store you have actually selected requires it, and tells you where to buy one in your country if it does.

Still deciding?

Reading the notes on your own first chapter answers this better than any page can. New accounts get credits to do exactly that.
